Wayland Academy is a private, coeducational college preparatory day and boarding Grades 9-12 school. It prepares international students for college and beyond through a liberal arts curriculum and study programs devoted to the pursuit of knowledge and character development. Today, the school is home to 165 students, including international students from 20 countries.

The mission of Wayland Academy focuses on four pillars of education: Scholarship, Faith, Health, and Service, which are essential components of developing well-rounded individuals. The first pillar means traditional college preparation in English, Science, Mathematics, History, Social Science, Languages, and Fine Arts. The second pillar emphasizes the moral, ethical, and spiritual awareness of students. The third pillar supports the emotional and physical development of students through athletics. The fourth pillar highlights the importance of student awareness of social obligations, both in the community and in the world.

State Overview

Wayland Academy is situated in Beaver Dam, Dodge County, along Beaver Dam Lake and the Beaver Dam River. It is 65 km from Madison, 95 km from Milwaukee, and 240 km from Chicago, Illinois. The location of the school allows international students to connect with nature while also being nearby key metropolitan areas. Weekends at Wayland Academy are filled with biking, hiking, kayaking, swimming, skiing, and shopping.

The fascinating 0.22 km2 campus of Wayland Academy consists of north and south halves. North campus has separate buildings for academic faculties, dormitory space, and administration. The South campus consists of athletic fields and the field house.

Wayland Academy has several comfortable and secure dormitories for international students who want to live on campus. Wayland Hall serves as a dormitory for boys in Grades 9 and 10, while Warren Cottage serves as a dormitory for girls in Grades 9 and 10. The twin dormitories, Ella Dye and Glen Dye, house students of Grades 11 and 12. The women live in Glen Dye, and the men live in Ella Dye.

With more than a dozen sports to choose from, Wayland Academy encourages athletes who are striving to compete at the collegiate level but also creates a welcoming environment for beginners. In addition to fields for soccer, football, and track, the school has eleven tennis courts, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a weight training area, a swimming pool, and a horizontal bouldering wall.

At Wayland Academy, international students also have endless opportunities for creative expression through classes, performances, and extracurricular activities. The Fine Arts Department promotes the study and practice of visual and performing arts as an essential aspect of a comprehensive educational experience. The performing arts curriculum offers students courses in Music Theory, Music History, Theater, Instrumental Music, and Choral Music. The visual arts curriculum at Wayland offers courses in Honors Art, Advanced Placement Studio Art, Graphic Arts, and Graphic Media.

During the study at Wayland Academy, international students can explore their interests through a variety of special interest clubs and leadership opportunities. Some of them include Robotics and Technology Club, the Model United Nations, the Junior Classical League, the Thespian Society, the Art Club, the Ping Pong Club, and the Yoga Club.

Overview of the Programs

Now, it is time to discuss the study programs at Wayland Academy, which focus on preparing international students for undergraduate colleges and universities upon graduation. The school offers classes on three levels: college preparatory, honors, and AP (Advanced Placement). It means that each international student encounters the right level of challenge in each area of study. Placement into one of these levels is determined by evaluative criteria, such as previous grades, standardized test results, and teacher recommendations.

The rigorous academic program of Wayland Academy features small classes, Capstone projects, a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) program, and 23 AP courses.

The Capstone program of Wayland Academy aims to develop the research, writing, and presentation skills of international students. In all four grades, students conduct guided and independent research into a subject that captures their interest. They can explore capstone topics in a wide range of areas, including biology, literature, history, and topics such as women in STEM fields and drunk driving laws in Wisconsin.

The AP program allows international students to pursue college-level studies in high school. The advantages of AP courses include quality and accelerated learning with the potential for college credit. At Wayland Academy, students can choose Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English, European History, German, Macroeconomics, Physics, Spanish, Statistics, US Government and Policies, US History, and Studio Art, to name a few.

The College Counseling program at Wayland Academy is a highly individualized process. The mission of the program is to guide international students through the college admission process, providing them with the needed knowledge, skills, and resources. The college counselors advise, inform, clarify, guide, encourage, aid, and support each student in their quest to gain college admission. Graduates of Wayland Academy are accepted to the University of Chicago, Cornell University, University of Michigan, New York University, and Northwestern University, to name a few.

Admission Requirements

To apply to Wayland Academy, parents and international students need to complete several steps.

  1. They ought to fill out the application through the website of Wayland Academy, Standard Application Online, or Gateway to Prep Schools.
  2. International students should provide transcripts for the past two consecutive years of education.
  3. They must submit two teacher recommendations. One recommendation should be from a Math or Science teacher, and one from a History, English, or Social Studies teacher.
